Summer Gardening Workshop at Epsom Library on 21 Nov 2025

On a bright Friday morning, the community garden hosted an engaging gardening workshop that welcomed 9 participants eager to learn about growing their own salad ingredients. The event featured Ali, an expert in gardening, as the speaker, with Joey from CCET serving as the Chinese interpreter, ensuring that all attendees could fully engage with the material.
Following the introduction, the focus shifted to preparing garden beds. Ali guided the attendees through the necessary steps to create optimal planting conditions, emphasizing the importance of soil preparation. She instructed them to add lamb and horse manure, decomposed plant material, mushroom meal, and fish bone meal to enrich the soil. This preparation ensured that the soil was ready for the seedlings.

Ali also shared a clever tip for dealing with pesky snails. She recommended using a yogurt container with holes in the lid to create a simple trap. By pouring cheap beer into the container, snails would be lured in and meet their demise, providing an effective and low-cost pest control solution.

Finally, the workshop wrapped up with participants watering their newly planted seedlings, ensuring they received the necessary moisture to thrive. Ali suggested adding the lamb manure into their watering tools; as it breaks down slowly in the water, it would act as a beneficial fertilizer.
The event was not only informative but also fostered a sense of community among the attendees, who left inspired to cultivate their own gardens and enjoy the benefits of growing fresh salad ingredients.
