Every year Aucklanders send 1.2 million tonnes of household and commercial waste to landfill. This amount could cover the rugby field at Eden Park to twice the height of the Sky Tower annually.

You can take waste that is not suitable for kerbside collection to a transfer station.

Most transfer stations accept garden waste, large household waste, hazardous household waste and scrap metal but you should check what you can take before you go.

Some hazardous waste, such as; batteries, computers, paint, fridges, some chemicals and light bulbs are accepted in household quantities with no extra charge.

Hazardous waste such as; asbestos, medical waste, ballasts (including fluorescent light fittings), and waste likely to create excessive dust or particles is not accepted.

All free/discount decisions on whether items are suitable for reuse and eligible for a financial discount are at the sole discretion of the Charity group running the reuse shop with their decision being final. · Discounts are based on an estimated weight for the item/s which is to be determined by the Charity group. · Discounts must be claimed on the same day and within a specified time period, detailed on the discount leaflet provided when leaving the item. To take advantage of the discount for reusable items please visit the reuse shop on the following days: Tuesday to Saturday: 9am – 4pm or Sunday 9am – 3:30pm. Community recycling centres,Anyone can leave their inorganic waste there.

http://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/EN/environmentwaste/rubbishrecycling/Pages/CommunityRecyclingCentres.aspx

Community Recycling Centres are facilities where residents can drop-off unwanted items and materials for reuse and recycling. They are council-owned but run by community enterprises.

The aim is to reduce waste to landfill by reusing, re-purposing and recycling as much as possible, and to create local jobs and other community benefits in the process.

To help with this goal the centres have shops on site, which sell usable household and building materials.

Items the centres will accept include:

  • Fridges, furniture, lawnmowers, bicycles, books, timber, household bric a brac
  • green waste and general rubbish (some sites only).
